Really, Somatic Experiencing online?
I was skeptical initially. After all, Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented modality, so how can that work?
Much of how I practice in the office can be replicated in a virtual session. We can still explore sensations and learn how to develop an internal sense of safety.
Resilience and nervous system regulation are achievable in this format. We will be able to address most trauma issues.
Is virtual therapy right for my situation?
It is a good option if you have a hectic life which makes it difficult for you to allocate time toward commuting to and from sessions. It’s great for people who live far away or are traveling frequently.
There are limitations. Some issues, I think are best addressed in person. Touch work isn’t an option. If there is so much freeze in the nervous system which is making expressing yourself challenging, being in person is a better approach.
Of course, there is always a third way. Some clients do a combination – both in person and virtual sessions.
What you need
All you need is a reliable WiFi connection and a computer, tablet, or phone. I will send you a link for an online platform that we will use regularly. Just save the link. If you have any questions, I will guide you through it.
Finding a safe, comfortable, private space (at home, or your backyard, etc.) free from interruptions is essential. Be sure to bring anything that will help provide you with a sense of comfort and safety –blankets, a cup of tea…
If possible, it really helps to meet in person for one or two sessions, so we can get a clear sense of each other.
Because I am unable to see your entire body, the more you can verbalize what you are experiencing, the more effective it is.
