Anxiety is in charge of your life.
This beach day is perfect! The water is a sparkly blue, a few clouds are floating by, and you are sitting under an umbrella with friends who are resting and relaxed.
Not you. You’re antsy. That list in your head gets longer with each rolling tide. Those thoughts NEVER shut off.
You are sitting at your desk. Taking a full breath is difficult and thinking about it makes it worse.
Your heart is jumping out of your chest. You have chest pain and feel flushed. A feeling of doom. Is it a heart attack?
Clarity, logic, and articulation are requirements for this high stake conversation. As you start, freeze sets in, your throat begins to constrict, and your stomach tightens. All your thoughts disappear. All you can think of is, “I can’t do this.”
Anxiety has many forms of expression and sources.
Anxiety can show up as panic attacks, excessive worrying, inability to focus, or a generalized feeling of tension in the body.
Maybe the genetic lottery didn’t play out for you very well. Sometimes our parents experienced trauma and were anxious. Our young delicate nervous systems absorb their anxiety like sponges.
Often, anxiety is rooted in overwhelming events in childhood or adulthood.
Persistent anxiety can rule every part of you.
Anxiety takes a toll on the body, relationships, and your general well-being.
Feeling anxious in various settings keeps you in a fight-or-flight mode, causing you to strike out or freeze to protect yourself. That self-protective energy – clenching, bracing, etc. – gets stuck in the body. It can eventually cause physical havoc… intestinal and digestive issues, headaches, muscular pain, etc.
You can get to the point where you feel anxious about being anxious.
Can anxiety become a thing of the past?
Yes. Freedom from anxiety is attainable! Somatic Experiencing helps you release that self-protective energy, allowing the tape to stop running in your mind.
Taking easy deep breaths becomes routine, and panic attacks become a thing of the past.
You can have “those” conversations and express yourself with logic and clarity and stop fearing when the next disaster will strike.
